The Challenge
Iceland is a British supermarket chain headquartered in Deeside, Wales, known for its focus on frozen foods, alongside a full range of fresh and dry groceries. A household name in the UK, its long-running slogan — "That's why mums go to Iceland" — has cemented the brand’s place in popular culture.
Iceland’s ambition was to manage price books for each of its 720 stores with price and availability data extending 14 days ahead. In their SiteGenesis implementation, SFCC’s limitations meant they could only display three days of availability — a major barrier to providing accurate, customer-specific pricing and stock visibility.
The 64Labs Solution
64Labs built a proof of concept using Algolia, a leader in headless search, to demonstrate how a composable architecture could bypass SFCC’s price-book limitations. The POC impressed Iceland with its speed, flexibility, and scalability.
They commissioned a full Progressive Web App (PWA) to:
The project took six months from start to launch and went live in 2024.
Why It Matters for eCommerce Leaders
Iceland’s success shows how composable architecture can overcome core platform constraints - unlocking capabilities that traditional monolithic setups can’t deliver. For retailers with complex pricing and inventory rules, composable approaches offer flexibility, speed, and scalability without waiting for a full platform upgrade.
